1 Why Your Profile Is Everything
The recruiting landscape has changed — here's what that means for you.
Only 7% of high school athletes go on to play college sports. The difference between the ones who make it and the ones who don't often comes down to one thing: visibility. Coaches can't recruit athletes they've never seen.
Coaches Have 8 Seconds
The average college coach spends under 8 seconds on a first look at a prospect. A clean, complete card makes an instant impression. A messy one gets skipped.
CriticalScouts Search by Filter
College scouts don't browse — they filter. Sport, position, GPA, state, graduation year. If your profile is incomplete, you won't appear in their results at all.
DiscoverabilityOne Link Does It All
Your DraftReady.AI™ card is a single shareable URL. Email it, text it, print a QR code for your jersey number card. One link contains everything a coach needs.

- Never share their profile link
- Build a card once and forget it
2 Nail the Basics First
These fields take 5 minutes to fill out and they determine whether scouts can even find you.
Full Name & Position
Use your real full name — coaches run background checks. Your position is the #1 search filter coaches use. Be specific: not just "Basketball" but "Point Guard."
Location & School
City, state, and high school name are mandatory. Many scouts search by region first. Missing location = invisible to local programs actively looking for hometown athletes.
Graduation Year
Coaches recruit by class year. A D1 coach building their 2026 class is only looking at 2026 grads. If this field is blank, you disappear from all class-year searches.
Height, Weight & Physical
Coaches have minimum physical requirements for every position. Include height, weight, and for applicable sports: wingspan, 40 time, vertical leap, or bench max.
Pro tip: Write your bio in third person — "Marcus is a 6'2" point guard with a 3.8 GPA…" — it reads more professionally and mirrors how coaches describe prospects to their recruiting boards.
3 Your Highlight Reel — The #1 Factor
Athletes with a highlight reel get 3× more inquiries. Here's how to make yours impossible to ignore.
The rule of thumb: If a coach has to wait more than 20 seconds to see you actually playing, they're already gone. Your reel must open with your absolute best moment — not a title card, not slow music, not a montage intro. Your. Best. Play. First.
Open With Your Single Best Play
The first clip sets the entire tone. Coaches decide if they keep watching in the first 10 seconds. Lead with your most impressive, clean-angle moment — a game-winning shot, a 40-yard run, a dominant block.
Show Position-Specific Skills
A point guard should show ball handling, court vision, and mid-range shooting — not just dunks. A linebacker needs coverage clips, not just sacks. Show coaches you can do the actual job they're recruiting for.
Include Game Film, Not Just Practice
Practice clips look easy. Coaches want to see you perform under pressure, against real opponents, in real game situations. Mix in sideline/endzone angles too — coaches watch how you react between plays.
Keep It Under 4 Minutes
The ideal reel is 3–4 minutes. Anything longer and coaches lose focus. If you have 10 minutes of footage, edit ruthlessly — only include clips that make you look elite. Quality always beats quantity.
Label Your Clips On Screen
Add simple text overlays: "Varsity vs. Lincoln High — Oct 2024" or "State Championship." Context makes coaches trust the footage. Unlabeled clips raise doubt about their difficulty level.
Add Full Game Links Too
DraftReady.AI™ lets you link up to 3 full game videos. Add these — serious coaches want to watch how you play for a full quarter, not just curated highlights. It shows confidence in your all-around game.
Reel Best Practices
- High resolution (1080p minimum)
- Clean audio or no music at all
- Stable, clear camera angles
- Most recent season first
- Host on YouTube (unlisted is fine)
Common Reel Mistakes
- Long logo/music intro before any action
- Blurry or shaky phone footage
- Including errors or weak plays
- Using a 3-year-old reel
- Hosting on a password-locked private link
4 Stats, GPA & Academics
Numbers tell the story your highlights can't. Here's what scouts actually search for.
| Field | Why Coaches Care | Importance | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPA | NCAA eligibility requires minimum 2.3 (D1) or 2.2 (D2). Coaches won't recruit below the cutoff — it's a wasted scholarship. | Critical | If your GPA is 3.5+, it's a competitive advantage — say so prominently. |
| Key Stats | Points, rebounds, assists, yards, touchdowns — coaches compare you against other prospects numerically before watching video. | Critical | Use season averages, not single-game bests. Coaches know the difference. |
| Completion % | Efficiency stats (FG%, completion rate, save rate) signal coachability and consistency — not just raw talent. | Critical | Include shooting or completion percentage even if it's just okay — blank looks worse. |
| Recruiting Level | D1, D2, D3, JUCO, NAIA — coaches filter to their own division first. Wrong level tag = zero visibility to right programs. | Critical | Be realistic. A D3 coach doesn't waste time on D1-only athletes. |
| ACT / SAT Score | Academic scholarships at many programs are tied to test scores. Academic ADs specifically look for this. | Important | Even a modest score is better than none — shows you took it. |
| Awards & Honors | "All-State," "Team MVP," "Academic All-Conference" — these are social proof markers that coaches share with ADs when justifying a scholarship offer. | Important | List them specifically: "2024 All-State First Team — Texas 6A." |
| 40-Yard / Vertical | For football, track, and basketball prospects, these benchmarks are used to confirm athleticism claims in the bio. | Helpful | Only include if tested officially — coaches are skeptical of self-reported times. |
NCAA Qualifier status is a filter on our Scout Portal. If you've met NCAA eligibility requirements, check the NCAA Qualifier badge toggle on your card. Coaches filter for this specifically — especially for late-signing-period searches where eligibility needs to be confirmed fast.
5 Advanced Features That Separate You
Most athletes stop at the basics. These features push you to the top of the stack.
NCAA Qualifier Badge
If you've met NCAA clearing house requirements, toggle this badge ON. It appears prominently on your card and makes you filterable in the scout portal. Coaches recruiting for an immediate start need this confirmed before they reach out.
High ImpactPassword-Protected Transcript
Upload your academic transcript behind a password. Your card shows a locked "View Academic Transcript" button. Share the password with coaches who send an inquiry — it signals academic seriousness and filters out non-serious contacts.
Trust BuilderFull Game Video Links
Add up to 3 full game video links with custom labels like "State Championship — 4th Quarter" or "vs. #1 Ranked Team." Coaches evaluating scholarship decisions want to watch full games, not just curated highlights.
Depth SignalQR Code on Print
Your card auto-generates a QR code. Print it on a business card, put it on your athletic locker, hand it to coaches at camps and combines. One scan takes them directly to your full digital profile — no typing, no forgetting.
In-Person EdgeThe power move: Athletes who fill out every field — including advanced features — appear higher in scout portal results. Completeness is a ranking signal. A 100% profile beats a 60% profile every time, even if the raw talent is similar.
6 What Coaches Actually Think
Straight talk from the other side of the recruiting table.
"I open maybe 40 profiles a week. I click the highlight reel first — if the video is private or broken, I'm done. I've moved on before the page even loads. Fix your link before you share anything."Division I Men's Basketball — Associate Head Coach · Midwest Conference
"GPA is non-negotiable at our program. We filter below 3.0 out of our search immediately — not because the athlete can't play, but because our admissions office won't approve it. I don't even see those profiles."D2 Football — Recruiting Coordinator · Southeast Region
"I love when a player includes full game film. Anyone can look good in a 3-minute highlight reel. I want to see how you play when you're tired in the 70th minute and your team is down by one. That tells me everything about character."NCAA Women's Soccer — Head Coach · Pacific Coast
"The cards I remember are the ones with a real bio — not just stats, but something that tells me who this person is. Why do you swim? What do you want to study? That's what separates someone from a spreadsheet entry."Division III Swimming — Head Coach · New England
